Born in Madrid, Spain and raised in Aberdeen, Scotland, Carla Wright began her art training at the age of six when an acclaimed landscape artist discovered her drawing flowers in a park and offered to teach her. Carla studied under George Douglas for the next ten years, learning “old-school” art principles she continues to put into daily practice.
At the age of fifteen, she was accepted into the renowned Grays School of Art in Aberdeen, but on her father’s advice decided to forgo the formal instruction because her art was already selling well. Her specialty, at the time, was painting historical landmarks in Scotland (in fine art, abstract, and impressionism styles) and selling the artwork to private collectors.
At twenty-one, Carla moved to the United States with her husband Eldon, and shortly thereafter, they had their first child, Dominique. Their daughter Rebecca was born four years later, and as the family moved around the U.S., relocating for Eldon’s job in the oil industry, Carla continued to paint, primarily commissioned works. At different points, she also taught art at a private school in Durango, Colorado and had a studio in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
In 2006, with her daughters in their teens, Carla turned more of her attention back to art. She’d always wanted to open her own gallery, as a hub for locals and tourists, and she chose to locate it in the Art District on Santa Fe, which is one of the most popular areas in Denver for galleries. In the gallery, she has her own artwork on display, as well as art from eighteen other artists.
An award-winning, internationally known artist, Carla Wright has taken traditional landscape art and added a modern twist in her paintings. Her artwork (which is fun and colorful) crosses categories, to include abstract, contemporary, modernism, surrealism, impressionism, fine art, landscape art, and portrait art. She paints in oil and acrylic, on canvas, wooden panels, and ceramic boards. Her artwork ranges in size from 24 inches by 24 inches, to 3 feet by 8 feet, and she creates original art as well as commissioned artwork.
